Asbestos Disposal in Wagga Wagga: Plan It Before You Move It

Asbestos waste isn’t ordinary rubbish. How it’s packaged, transported and disposed of is strictly regulated in NSW.

Once asbestos has been removed, the job isn’t finished until the waste is safely at a licensed facility. Asbestos can’t go into household bins, general skip bins, kerbside collections, recycling or clean-up days. It must be sealed, labelled, transported in a set way and delivered only to a facility licensed by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to accept it.

The rules

How Asbestos Waste Must Be Handled in NSW

NSW has clear rules for asbestos waste, designed to stop fibres escaping and to prevent illegal dumping.

Packaging. Bonded asbestos must be securely wrapped in heavy-duty plastic sheeting and sealed, while friable asbestos must be placed in sealed, leak-proof containers. Waste should be clearly labelled as asbestos.
Transport. Asbestos must be carried in a covered, leak-proof vehicle and taken directly to a facility that can lawfully accept it.
Tracking. Any single load of asbestos waste weighing more than 100 kilograms, or containing more than 10 square metres of asbestos sheeting, must be tracked through the NSW EPA’s Integrated Waste Tracking Solution (IWTS). This applies to anyone transporting it, not just licensed removalists. For perspective, a single garden shed, a short run of fence or a small section of roof can easily go over these limits.
Disposal. Asbestos can only be delivered to a waste facility licensed to receive it, usually by prior booking and under specific conditions.

Where Asbestos Goes in Wagga Wagga

Wagga Wagga City Council identifies the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre as the only facility in the Wagga Wagga local government area licensed by the NSW EPA to accept asbestos waste. Council requires advance notice before any asbestos is delivered and sets conditions for what it will accept. The process differs depending on whether the waste is delivered by a homeowner, an unlicensed person within the permitted limit, or a licensed contractor.

Council advises that licensed contractors must record the load in the IWTS and book disposal before arriving. When we handle your removal, our contractor takes care of this on your behalf.

Your health and your family’s. Every time asbestos is lifted, stacked, loaded and unloaded, there’s a chance of breakage and fibre release. Our licensed contractor uses controlled methods to minimise that risk at every step.
Getting it right the first time. Loads that aren’t correctly wrapped, labelled, tracked or booked can be turned away at the gate, leaving you with asbestos in your car, trailer or driveway and nowhere to take it.

DIY limits

What About Removing Small Amounts Yourself?

Wagga Wagga City Council states that homeowners may remove less than 10 square metres of non-friable (bonded) asbestos themselves, but recommends engaging a licensed contractor to minimise exposure risks. This page isn’t a do-it-yourself guide. If you’re unsure what the material is, how much there is, what condition it’s in or the correct procedure, please get professional advice before touching it.

Remember that 10 square metres is smaller than it sounds. It’s roughly the size of a small bathroom’s wall linings, or a few metres of standard fencing. Friable asbestos must never be removed by anyone other than a Class A licensed removalist.
